Driven by a deep commitment to the future of family medicine, active engagement within the American Academy of Family Physicians is more critical than ever. My 42-year career as a family physician has been marked by a consistent effort to advocate for my patients, community, and fellow physicians, exemplified by my leadership roles within the South Carolina chapter, including president, board chair, and AAFP delegate, as well as my service on AAFP commissions. These experiences have provided me with valuable skills in strategic planning, consensus-building, and effective advocacy. Having served at the state level, I am now eager to bring my knowledge and passion to the Academy at this pivotal time.
We are facing unprecedented challenges from anti-science activism and policies that threaten the progress of science. The very foundation of our evidence-based health care system is under siege, making the role of organizations like the AAFP all the more indispensable. We must safeguard the hard-won advancements of modern health care and be prepared to reinforce the principles of scientific integrity. My motivation stems from the urgent need to champion our shared vision: that healthcare should be inclusive, equitable, and firmly grounded in science.
Recognizing the importance of considering diverse perspectives, I believe that decisions must be rooted in sound data and guided by what best serves the organization, the medical profession, and the health and well-being of the people we serve. My proven leadership abilities and unwavering commitment to these principles make me a strong candidate for the Board. My goal is to actively champion the values of family medicine, promote evidence-based care in the face of growing opposition, and strengthen the role of family physicians in safeguarding the health and well-being of our nation.
