H. Griffin Cupstid, M.D., FAAFP, has dedicated his career to family medicine in South Carolina. Born in Columbia, he graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in biology from the University of South Carolina. He continued his education at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. He completed his family medicine residency at Spartanburg General Hospital, where he was co-chief resident and received the Outstanding Resident Award.
Dr. Cupstid initially practiced in an HMO setting before establishing his own multi-site family medicine group practice serving rural communities in upstate South Carolina. In 1996, he sold his practice to Mary Black Health System, which later merged with Spartanburg Regional Health Care System. During his time with the hospital system, he held various leadership roles, including coding advisor, family medicine department chair, and chief of staff. He also served on the hospital Board of Trustees and as the hospital’s representative to Triad Hospitals National Physician Leadership Group. As chief informatics officer for Mary Black Health System, he led the implementation of electronic health records.
Beyond his professional roles, Dr. Cupstid has been actively involved in community service. He has served as a youth soccer coach and as a board member and volunteer for Ballet Spartanburg, demonstrating his commitment to the well-being and cultural enrichment of his community. He also has a long history of volunteering at St. Luke’s Free Medical Clinic. Currently, he represents the South Carolina Medical Association on the state board that regulates radiology technicians.
He currently practices full-time at MGC Carolina Family Physicians and is a member of the Information Technology Advisory Committee. He has been actively involved in the South Carolina chapter of the AAFP, serving on multiple committees and as president and board chair.
He currently co-chairs the Legislative Affairs Committee, edits the chapter’s journal, and serves as the chapter's representative to the South Carolina Medical Association. For over 10 years, he has facilitated the ABFM Knowledge Self Assessment Study Group at the chapter’s annual assembly. In 2024, he was named South Carolina Family Physician of the Year.
His national involvement includes representing South Carolina in the AAFP Congress of Delegates, attending Family Medicine Advocacy Summits, and serving on the Commission on Quality and Practice, as well as the Commission on Finance and Insurance. His clinical interests include preventive care, immunizations, population health, and advocating for science-based medicine.
Outside of his professional life, Dr. Cupstid is married to Betty and is the father of three married children and the grandfather of six. His hobbies include bicycling, kayaking, reading, and spending time at South Carolina beaches with his family.
His career and community involvement reflect a strong commitment to patient care, leadership within the medical community, and a dedication to the overall well-being of his community in Spartanburg.
